The Nib Safety Net

"Gravity Happens. We’ve Got You Covered."

We know the heartbreak of a fountain pen hitting the floor. As a member of our Creative Rewards, you don't have to worry about the 'tines.' If the worst happens, just send us a photo and we'll send you a 50% discount for a fresh start.

"The Nib Safety Net" – Terms & Conditions

  • Eligibility: This benefit is exclusive to active members of the Creative Rewards program at the time of the accident.
  • Coverage: The 50% discount applies strictly to accidental damage (e.g., dropping the pen) that renders the nib unusable. It does not cover intentional damage, loss of the pen, theft, or normal wear and tear.
  • The Claim: To activate your discount, you must provide a clear photo of the damaged nib and your original order number to oops@yourstore.com.
  • Limitations: This discount is valid for a one-time replacement per pen purchased and applies only to the cost of the replacement nib unit. It cannot be combined with other promotional codes or used for full pen replacements.
  • Availability: We will provide the discount for the exact nib model where stock is available. If the model is discontinued, we will offer a 50% discount on a comparable alternative nib unit.

The standard illustration and zine black

For dip pen illustration and zine production, Document Black is the primary recommendation. It covers cleanly in a single pass, dries waterproof, and photocopies and scans without ghosting or bleed. For analogue zine work — dip pen on Bristol board, photocopy to reproduce — it is the correct tool. For pen and wash illustration — dip pen line then watercolour wash over the top — it is one of very few inks that reliably holds up under wet media.

Document Black vs standard black inks

Standard dye-based black inks — Diamine Graphite, Pilot Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo used as a near-black — are not waterproof. Apply wash over them and the lines will run. Document Black is formulated specifically to be waterproof once dry. The tradeoff is higher maintenance in fountain pens — flush regularly to prevent the waterproofing agent building in feeds.

Honest Note:

This is a professional-grade, nano-pigment archival ink engineered for absolute water resistance. Once cured on paper, it cannot be re-wetted or blended out with a brush—it forms a permanent structural bond with the cellulose fibers. While it runs wetly enough for dip pen layout work, you must flush your fountain pens with specialized cleaner every two weeks to prevent micro-pigment buildup along the feed channels. Never load this ink into vintage latex sac-fillers.

Who is it For?

  • Illustrators using dip pens who apply wash over finished linework
  • Zine makers working in hand-drawn black and white for photocopy reproduction
  • Manga artists working analogue who need a photocopyable black
  • Calligraphers requiring a permanent waterproof black for finished pieces
  • Fountain pen users who need a reliable waterproof black

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUSTIONS (FAQ)

Is Document Black safe in a fountain pen?

Yes, with regular maintenance. Flush your pen every one to two weeks to prevent the waterproofing agent building up in the feed. In daily use with regular writing, no special precautions are needed beyond normal maintenance. Not suitable for vintage pens with rubber sac systems.

Will Document Black hold up under watercolour wash?

Yes — once fully dry (allow 5–10 minutes on smooth papers). It is one of the few inks reliably tested for pen and wash use. Apply wash in single deliberate strokes rather than repeatedly scrubbing over the ink lines.

Is this suitable for photocopied zines?

Yes — it is specifically formulated to be photocopyable. Dense, matte, and stable on Bristol board and other smooth papers. Test your specific copier and paper combination, but Document Black is the standard recommendation for hand-drawn photocopy zines.
