The ink bar in Kuramae
In 2014 Kakimori opened Inkstand, an ink bar in Tokyo’s Kuramae craft district — now under the same roof as the Kakimori shop — where customers choose two or three base colours, mix them with droppers until the colour is right, and have it bottled to order. Kakimori keeps every recipe on file so it can be made again. These are those base colours. Buy two or three and you have the Inkstand bar on your own desk — without the appointment, and without the flight.
Why pigment makes mixing work
Mixing fountain pen inks is usually a gamble — dye inks from different makers can react, thicken, or settle in the pen. Kakimori developed this formula with Japanese pigment specialists Turner Colour Works specifically so the colours blend cleanly and resist the clogging most pigment inks are known for. The colours are deliberately bright, because that is what a mixing palette needs: you can always knock back a vivid colour with Smoky Black or Soil Brown, but you can never brighten a muddy one.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUSTIONS (FAQ)
How is Inkstand different from Kakimori Pigment Ink?
Both are Kakimori pigment inks made with Turner Colour Works. The Pigment Ink range (Po, Torori, Koton and the rest) is ten finished colours, balanced to use straight from the bottle. Inkstand is fourteen brighter base colours designed to be mixed. Want a beautiful colour today — choose Pigment Ink. Want to make your own — choose Inkstand.
Can I mix Inkstand with other inks?
Only with other Inkstand colours, plus Kakimori’s own Diluting and Pearlescent solutions. Do not mix with dye inks, other brands, or the numbered Kakimori Pigment Inks — flush the pen thoroughly when switching.
How do I mix a colour without wasting a bottle?
Shake each bottle, then mix in a small clean jar or palette, one drop at a time, using a separate dropper for each colour. Count and write down the drops so you can repeat the recipe. Test on your own paper before mixing a larger batch.
Is it fully waterproof?
It is water-resistant once dry and holds under watercolour washes — allow proper drying time first. Heavily diluted mixes carry less pigment and resist less, so test them. For an absolute waterproof black, Platinum Carbon Black is the stronger choice
