The Nib Safety Net

"Gravity Happens. We’ve Got You Covered."

We know the heartbreak of a fountain pen hitting the floor. As a member of our Creative Rewards, you don't have to worry about the 'tines.' If the worst happens, just send us a photo and we'll send you a 50% discount for a fresh start.

"The Nib Safety Net" – Terms & Conditions

  • Eligibility: This benefit is exclusive to active members of the Creative Rewards program at the time of the accident.
  • Coverage: The 50% discount applies strictly to accidental damage (e.g., dropping the pen) that renders the nib unusable. It does not cover intentional damage, loss of the pen, theft, or normal wear and tear.
  • The Claim: To activate your discount, you must provide a clear photo of the damaged nib and your original order number to oops@yourstore.com.
  • Limitations: This discount is valid for a one-time replacement per pen purchased and applies only to the cost of the replacement nib unit. It cannot be combined with other promotional codes or used for full pen replacements.
  • Availability: We will provide the discount for the exact nib model where stock is available. If the model is discontinued, we will offer a 50% discount on a comparable alternative nib unit.

The ink made in Kuramae

Kakimori is a stationery shop in Tokyo's Kuramae district that has spent years thinking carefully about what ink should do. Their pigment inks were not developed to extend a product range — they were developed because the existing pigment inks available to their customers didn't behave well enough for the kind of illustration work their customers were doing. The collaboration with Turner Colour Works produced something genuinely different: pigment inks that are permanent and water-resistant when dry, but that flow through a fountain pen with the smoothness of a dye ink.

The names matter

Each ink is named with a Japanese onomatopoeic word — Po, Torori, Tototo, Karari. These are words that describe how the ink feels and behaves rather than what colour it is. Torori means thick and flowing. Karari means dry and crisp. The naming is not decorative; it tells you something real about the character of each ink.

Honest Note:

A note on pen care

Pigment inks require more maintenance than dye inks. If you're using Kakimori in a fountain pen, flush with clean water weekly and do not leave the ink sitting in the pen for more than a fortnight without use. For trouble-free maintenance, the Platinum Ink Cleaner Kit in our Accessories section is specifically formulated for pigment inks including carbon-based formulations.

Who is it For?

  • Illustrators who use a fountain pen for linework then apply wash over finished lines.
  • Anyone who needs a fountain-pen-safe waterproof ink and has previously resorted to clogging their pen.
  • Botanical illustrators requiring archival ink for long-term display.
  • Fountain pen enthusiasts who want archival quality in a pen-safe format.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUSTIONS (FAQ)

Are Kakimori inks waterproof?

Yes — Kakimori pigment inks are water-resistant when fully dry, making them suitable for illustration work where washes will be applied over dry linework. They are not completely impervious to prolonged submersion but will survive normal illustration techniques including watercolour and ink washes.

Can Kakimori ink be used in any fountain pen?

Kakimori inks can be used in most fountain pens but require more frequent cleaning than dye inks. They are not recommended for pens with very fine nibs (under 0.3mm) or vintage pens with rubber sacs. The Pilot Falcon and Sailor Naginata flex pens in our range are both compatible.

Can I mix Kakimori with other inks?

We do not recommend mixing pigment inks with dye inks from other makers — the chemistry can interact unpredictably. Use Kakimori inks separately and flush thoroughly when switching to another brand.
