Why illustrators reach for Nicker White

Most white inks compromise. They dry translucent, bead on dark surfaces, or change consistency between bottles. Nicker White doesn't. The formulation was developed for professional animation production, where consistency across hundreds of hours of work is not optional. The result is an opaque white that covers cleanly in a single pass, holds its body on a loaded brush, and sits on top of finished ink lines without spreading.

What makes it different

The pigment load is higher than most Western poster colour whites. This means the coverage is genuine rather than approximate, and thinning with water produces a range of opacities that all behave predictably. Japanese animation artists use it for highlights and corrections; British illustrators who've discovered it tend not to go back to anything else.

Honest Note:

Dries quickly — keep lid sealed between sessions. If surface skins, remove skin; paint beneath is usually still usable. Thin with water only. Not suitable for pens or fountain pens. Designers White has a standalone product page for its use in calligraphy and botanical illustration.

Who is it For?

Illustrators who work with ink and need a reliable opaque white for highlights, corrections, and mixed media layering. Particularly useful over Fabriano Black Black paper, Deleter manga manuscript paper, and any dark-ground work. Also the standard recommendation for anyone using our Nicker SOU-YO Japanese hair brush.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUSTIONS (FAQ)

What is Nicker Poster Colour White used for?

Nicker Poster Colour White is used by illustrators and animation artists for opaque white highlights and corrections over inked linework. It's applied with a brush and dries matte and fully opaque.

Is Nicker White the same as gouache?

It's similar to gouache in application and finish but formulated with a higher pigment load specifically for illustration and animation production. It covers more consistently in a single pass than most comparable Western whites.

Can Nicker White be used in a fountain pen or dip pen?

No. It's too thick and pigment-heavy for fountain pens and will clog them. It's designed for brush application only. For opaque white in a pen format, see our white ink pens — the Uni Posca PC-1MR or the Uni-ball Signo Broad.
