The Nib Safety Net

"Gravity Happens. We’ve Got You Covered."

We know the heartbreak of a fountain pen hitting the floor. As a member of our Creative Rewards, you don't have to worry about the 'tines.' If the worst happens, just send us a photo and we'll send you a 50% discount for a fresh start.

"The Nib Safety Net" – Terms & Conditions

  • Eligibility: This benefit is exclusive to active members of the Creative Rewards program at the time of the accident.
  • Coverage: The 50% discount applies strictly to accidental damage (e.g., dropping the pen) that renders the nib unusable. It does not cover intentional damage, loss of the pen, theft, or normal wear and tear.
  • The Claim: To activate your discount, you must provide a clear photo of the damaged nib and your original order number to oops@yourstore.com.
  • Limitations: This discount is valid for a one-time replacement per pen purchased and applies only to the cost of the replacement nib unit. It cannot be combined with other promotional codes or used for full pen replacements.
  • Availability: We will provide the discount for the exact nib model where stock is available. If the model is discontinued, we will offer a 50% discount on a comparable alternative nib unit.

A drafting pencil built for deliberate, controlled work
The GraphGear 1000 is a heavier, more deliberate tool than a standard mechanical pencil. The brass components in the body add weight that changes the character of the mark-making: heavier tools reward slower, more controlled strokes and resist the tendency to sketch quickly and loosely. This is intentional — the GraphGear is designed for drafting and technical drawing where controlled, deliberate marks are the goal, not the fastest possible line. For illustration underdrawing where the pencil marks will be inked over, this character translates well: the slightly heavier feel encourages deliberate construction rather than loose gestural sketching, which typically produces underdrawings that are more useful as inking guides. The retractable tip guard protects the lead when the pencil is in a bag or case, which extends both the lead and the tip mechanism.

0.5mm or 0.7mm — the practical difference
The 0.5mm is the standard choice for detailed illustration underdrawing — fine enough to lay in construction lines that will be covered by dip pen linework without being mistaken for finished marks, and fine enough to indicate detail at the scale of manga and illustration production. The 0.7mm is slightly more forgiving of fragile lead breakage (thicker lead is less prone to snapping under moderate pressure) and is a reasonable choice for rough layout and blocking work where the finest precision is not needed at this stage. Both take Pentel Ain Stein leads, stocked separately.

Honest Note:

The heavier weight of the GraphGear 1000 is a feature for deliberate, controlled work and may feel unfamiliar if you are used to lighter plastic mechanical pencils. The 0.5mm lead is fragile — store leads in the original tube, handle carefully when loading, and avoid pressing with the point at an angle that would put lateral stress on the lead. The retractable tip guard should be extended before use and retracted before storage.

Who is it For?

  • Illustrators who want a precision underdrawing pencil with more weight and control than a standard mechanical pencil
  • Technical draftspeople who work with pen and ink and want their pencil and pen tools to be of comparable quality
  • Anyone who finds standard mechanical pencils too light or too flimsy for the controlled underdrawing they want to produce
  • Practitioners upgrading from a standard mechanical pencil who want to understand what a dedicated drafting pencil provides

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUSTIONS (FAQ)

Which lead grade for illustration underdrawing?

HB is the standard starting point — dark enough to see comfortably while constructing the underdrawing, light enough to erase cleanly if needed and to recede under the scanner's greyscale interpretation. H is lighter — useful when the underdrawing will be inked over and you want the pencil lines to be as unobtrusive as possible in the finished piece. 2H is the lightest in the Ain Stein range — for very faint construction lines and perspective guides. All three are stocked separately as Pentel Ain Stein Lead.

0.5mm or 0.7mm?

0.5mm for fine, precise underdrawing where the pencil lines need to indicate detail clearly at the working scale. 0.7mm for rough layout work where the slightly thicker lead is more durable under the pressure variation of rough sketching. Both are practical choices; 0.5mm is the more common choice for finished illustration underdrawing.

What leads should I use?

Pentel Ain Stein 0.5mm leads are stocked separately and are specifically formulated for the smooth, consistent feed of the GraphGear's mechanism. Standard Pentel leads and most other brands of 0.5mm lead also fit — the Ain Stein is recommended because its consistency and break resistance are designed for the kind of deliberate pressure the GraphGear encourages.
