Beta is a premium mixed media paper — not cotton, but it handles multiple wet layers very well in normal sketchbook practice. The practical difference: Arches is for finished pieces; Beta is for regular sketchbook practice where the cost and handling of cut Arches sheets would be impractical. Many botanical illustrators and watercolourists work out studies in Beta before executing finished pieces on Arches. Note also: Zeta (smooth surface, same weight) is the better choice if pen and ink is your primary medium alongside watercolour.
