The Nib Safety Net

"Gravity Happens. We’ve Got You Covered."

We know the heartbreak of a fountain pen hitting the floor. As a member of our Creative Rewards, you don't have to worry about the 'tines.' If the worst happens, just send us a photo and we'll send you a 50% discount for a fresh start.

"The Nib Safety Net" – Terms & Conditions

  • Eligibility: This benefit is exclusive to active members of the Creative Rewards program at the time of the accident.
  • Coverage: The 50% discount applies strictly to accidental damage (e.g., dropping the pen) that renders the nib unusable. It does not cover intentional damage, loss of the pen, theft, or normal wear and tear.
  • The Claim: To activate your discount, you must provide a clear photo of the damaged nib and your original order number to oops@yourstore.com.
  • Limitations: This discount is valid for a one-time replacement per pen purchased and applies only to the cost of the replacement nib unit. It cannot be combined with other promotional codes or used for full pen replacements.
  • Availability: We will provide the discount for the exact nib model where stock is available. If the model is discontinued, we will offer a 50% discount on a comparable alternative nib unit.

When the sketchbook needs to handle heavy wet media
Beta exists to solve a specific problem: the practitioner who wants a sketchbook for serious wet media work but does not want to use expensive loose sheets or stretched paper for practice and daily work. At 270gsm, Beta handles multiple watercolour layers without the buckling that would ruin a lighter paper. The surface has a slight texture — more tooth than the Zeta's smooth surface — which watercolour adheres to and activates on in a more traditional way. The hardcover keeps the pages under a degree of tension that further resists buckling. For illustrators who work in pen and watercolour sketchbooks regularly, Beta is the most practical studio sketchbook in the Inkwell range.

How Beta differs from Arches Hot Press — and why both are stocked
Arches Hot Press 300gsm is 100% cotton — fully archival, handles unlimited wet layers, and is the correct choice for finished exhibition-quality work. Beta is a premium mixed media paper — not cotton, but it handles multiple wet layers very well in normal sketchbook practice. The practical difference: Arches is for finished pieces; Beta is for regular sketchbook practice where the cost and handling of cut Arches sheets would be impractical. Many botanical illustrators and watercolourists work out studies in Beta before executing finished pieces on Arches. Note also: Zeta (smooth surface, same weight) is the better choice if pen and ink is your primary medium alongside watercolour.

Honest Note:

Beta is cold press — textured surface. If you want smooth surface for pen and ink alongside watercolour, use Zeta instead. Both are 270gsm with the same wet media capability; the surface character is the meaningful difference.

Who is it For?

  • Illustrators who work with watercolour and pen in sketchbook format regularly
  • Botanical illustrators who want a sketchbook for wet media studies and preparatory work before executing finished pieces on Arches
  • Anyone who has tried the Zeta and found it insufficient for their wet media use — buckling or insufficient surface sizing
  • Practitioners who want a practical, durable studio sketchbook for heavy mixed media work rather than expensive loose sheets

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUSTIONS (FAQ)

Does the paper buckle when using heavy watercolour washes?

No, the 270gsm extra-heavyweight paper is specifically designed to handle heavy water usage and multiple layers of paint without significant buckling or warping.

Can you use both sides of the page in a Beta Series sketchbook?

Yes, the paper is identical on both sides and its extreme thickness prevents bleed-through, making it perfect for double-sided mixed media work.

What is the difference between Beta and Zeta?

Beta is textured (Cold Press), whereas Zeta is completely smooth.
