The most flexible G-nib — expressive, demanding, worth it
Zebra G-nibs sit at the soft end of the Japanese G-nib spectrum. Where Tachikawa is medium flex and Nikko is slightly stiffer, Zebra responds most immediately to pressure variation. In the hands of an experienced illustrator with consistent pressure technique, this produces the most dramatically varied and expressive linework of the three options. The risk is proportional: the soft spring means that uncontrolled pressure, or pressure applied at the wrong angle, will splay the tines permanently.

The Spoon nib is a different character entirely — it has a concave body that holds a small reservoir of ink, requiring less frequent dipping and producing fine, consistent lines for sustained cross-hatching and detailed linework without the flex character of the G-nib.

Nib
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is the Zebra G-nib suitable for beginners?

No — the Zebra G-nib is the least forgiving of the three G-nib options. Its soft spring means uncontrolled pressure will splay the tines and ruin the nib before you have had a chance to develop technique. Start with the Tachikawa G-nib. Move to Zebra when you have consistent pressure control and want to explore a more expressive flex range.

What is the Spoon nib used for?

The Spoon nib has a distinctive concave body that holds a small ink reservoir. This means it needs re-dipping less frequently than flat-bodied nibs — useful for sustained fine linework and extended cross-hatching sessions. It does not flex intentionally; it is a precision tool, not an expressive one. Different from the G-nib in both design and purpose.

Can I use Zebra nibs in the same holder as Tachikawa nibs?

Yes — all standard Japanese G-nib format nibs are compatible with standard holders. Both the Tachikawa T-25 and T-40 holders accept Zebra nibs without modification.
