Broad-edge calligraphy — a completely different discipline from pointed pen
Broad-edge and pointed pen calligraphy both use dip pens but produce line variation in completely different ways. Pointed pen (copperplate, modern calligraphy) produces variation through pressure on a flexible nib — press for thick, release for thin. Broad-edge (italic, uncial, Gothic) produces variation through the angle of a flat nib edge relative to the stroke direction — thick strokes are made across the full nib width, thin strokes are made with the corner. No pressure variation is involved; the nib does not flex. The nib width determines letterform proportion: broader nibs for larger, more imposing letters; narrower nibs for finer work. The standard rule is that optimal letter height is approximately four to five times the nib width — a 1.5mm nib produces letters with an x-height of approximately 6-7mm. Brause broad-edge nibs in five widths cover the full range from fine studio work to large display lettering.

Nib Size
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Which width should I start with for italic calligraphy?

1.0mm or 1.5mm — wide enough to see the thick-and-thin strokes clearly and practice the nib angle technique, while producing a comfortable working letter height. The 0.5mm is for very small or highly detailed work. The 2.0mm and 3.0mm are for larger letterforms and display calligraphy.

Do I need an oblique holder for broad-edge nibs?

No — a standard straight holder is correct for broad-edge calligraphy. The oblique holder is specifically for pointed pen copperplate and Spencerian scripts. For italic, uncial, and Gothic calligraphy with flat-edged nibs, use a straight holder.

How is broad-edge technique different from pointed pen?

Pointed pen: flex the nib with pressure to create thick lines, release for thin. Broad-edge: hold the pen at a fixed angle to the paper (typically 30-45 degrees for italic) and change stroke direction — thick strokes come from strokes made across the full nib width, thin from strokes made with the corner. The nib itself does not flex and should not be pressed hard. The thick-thin variation is entirely a product of angle and direction.
