German nibs for pointed pen calligraphy — understanding the three options
Brause has been making calligraphy nibs in Iserlohn, Germany for generations. The pointed pen range is designed for scripts that achieve line variation through pressure on a flexible nib — copperplate, Spencerian, and modern calligraphy — rather than through nib angle as in broad-edge calligraphy. The Steno 510b is the standard recommendation for beginners: stiff enough to be forgiving of uneven pressure, flexible enough to develop the thick-thin variation that defines these scripts. The Rose nib is one of the most flexible pointed pen nibs available — very responsive to light pressure, producing dramatic variation, but demanding enough that it is not suitable for anyone who has not first developed control with a stiffer nib. The Blue Pumpkin sits between them with a larger body that holds more ink, making it useful for extended writing sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Which Brause nib should I start with?

The Steno 510b. It is the most widely recommended beginner copperplate nib across UK and international calligraphy instruction — forgiving of varied pressure while still producing genuine line variation once you have built the basic stroke technique. Starting with the Rose nib is the most common beginner mistake in pointed pen calligraphy.

Do I need an oblique holder for these nibs?

Yes — for copperplate and Spencerian scripts, the oblique holder is mechanically required, not a stylistic option. These scripts are designed to be written with the pen at approximately 52 degrees to the writing line. A straight holder requires extreme wrist rotation to achieve this angle, producing discomfort and inconsistency. The oblique holder positions the nib offset to the right, allowing a natural hand position. For broad-edge calligraphy (italic, Gothic, uncial) a straight holder is correct. The oblique holder is stocked separately and is included in the Calligraphy Start Kit.

What is the difference between the Rose nib and the Steno?

The Steno 510b has medium stiffness with moderate flex — forgiving and consistent. The Rose is one of the most flexible pointed pen nibs made — very responsive to light pressure, producing dramatic variation from hairline to bold swell. The Rose rewards experienced technique; it punishes inconsistent pressure immediately. Learn the Steno first.
