The production paper for manga — what non-photo blue means in practice
Deleter manuscript paper is made for manga production. The non-photo blue guidelines — panel borders, safe area borders, and crop marks — are printed in a specific pale blue that most photographic scanners exclude when operating in greyscale mode. This means the artist can ink directly over the blue guidelines with confidence: the pencil panel layout, the blue guidelines, and the inked linework all coexist on the page during production, but when the finished page is scanned correctly only the black ink appears in the output. This is not a trick or a filter applied after the fact — it is a property of how standard photographic sensors interpret colour wavelengths, and it is the production method used by professional manga artists in Japan. The 135gsm paper weight is chosen specifically to accept dip pen inks cleanly without feathering while remaining light enough to handle conveniently in a stack of forty pages.

Type A versus Type B

Type A has the standard production set of guidelines: outer border, safe area border, and crop marks. This is the professional production format — everything that a scan needs to be correctly trimmed and laid out, nothing extraneous. Type B adds further helper lines to assist with panel layout — horizontal guides at regular intervals that help maintain consistent gutter widths and panel heights without measuring. For an experienced manga artist, Type A is the correct choice. For beginners who are still developing a reliable sense of panel proportion and gutter consistency, Type B's additional structure provides useful scaffolding.

Honest Note:

The non-photo blue guidelines only disappear on photographic scanners with the correct settings applied — test your specific scanner before beginning a project. On a standard colour flatbed scan at default settings, the guidelines will be visible and will need to be removed in post-processing. At 110gsm this paper is not suitable for heavy wet media — it will buckle under watercolour or extended ink wash. It is a production paper, not a mixed-media paper.

Who is it For?

  • Manga artists producing original artwork intended for scanning and publication or distribution
  • Anyone working in analogue manga or comic production at the correct production format
  • Illustration students learning manga production workflow
  • Illustrators who want production-standard paper with scan-ready guidelines for other types of sequential art

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUSTIONS (FAQ)

Can I use alcohol markers on this?

Yes, the dense surface prevents excessive soaking, making it excellent for blending Alcohol markers.

Is the paper bleed-proof?

While highly resistant, very heavy wet-media application may require a backing sheet.

Will the blue guidelines actually disappear when I scan?

When your scanner is set to exclude blue wavelengths — yes. In most scanning software this setting is called 'remove non-photo blue', 'drop cyan channel', or it is achieved automatically by scanning in greyscale mode with the correct colour profile. On standard full-colour scanner settings, the pale blue guidelines will appear in the scan. Test your specific scanner and software settings on a sample page before beginning a project — the settings vary between scanner models and software versions

What nibs and inks should I use with this paper?

Tachikawa G-nibs with De Atramentis Document Black or Deleter Black No. 4 are the standard combination for manga production. De Atramentis Document Black is waterproof once dry and produces crisp, dense linework that scans well. Deleter Black No. 4 is specifically formulated for photocopy and scan reproduction and is the Japanese production standard ink.
