Kuretake Shueki Vermilion Ink 60ml

Shueki is Kuretake’s vermilion calligraphy ink — the warm orange-red used in Japan for correcting calligraphy, for seals and for painting alongside black sumi. It is a smooth-flowing, water-based pigment ink that works with pointed nibs, broad-edge pens and brushes, and gives strong opaque colour in a single stroke.

The Nib Safety Net

"Gravity Happens. We’ve Got You Covered."

We know the heartbreak of a fountain pen hitting the floor. As a member of our Creative Rewards, you don't have to worry about the 'tines.' If the worst happens, just send us a photo and we'll send you a 50% discount for a fresh start.

"The Nib Safety Net" – Terms & Conditions

  • Eligibility: This benefit is exclusive to active members of the Creative Rewards program at the time of the accident.
  • Coverage: The 50% discount applies strictly to accidental damage (e.g., dropping the pen) that renders the nib unusable. It does not cover intentional damage, loss of the pen, theft, or normal wear and tear.
  • The Claim: To activate your discount, you must provide a clear photo of the damaged nib and your original order number to oops@yourstore.com.
  • Limitations: This discount is valid for a one-time replacement per pen purchased and applies only to the cost of the replacement nib unit. It cannot be combined with other promotional codes or used for full pen replacements.
  • Availability: We will provide the discount for the exact nib model where stock is available. If the model is discontinued, we will offer a 50% discount on a comparable alternative nib unit.

The red of Japanese calligraphy

In a Japanese calligraphy class, the teacher corrects a student’s work in vermilion — a colour chosen because it sits clearly on top of black ink without fighting it. The same red appears on seal impressions and in ink painting. Kuretake has made sumi ink in Nara since 1902, and Shueki uses that ink-making knowledge in a ready-to-use liquid.

A red that behaves

Many red inks are thin and patchy. Shueki is smooth and well-pigmented: calligraphers report crisp hairlines and full swells from a pointed nib, and it saturates a brush well enough for long strokes and dry-brush texture.

Honest Note:

Vermilion is a warm orange-red, not a cool crimson or pink-red — if you need a true red, check the swatch before buying. It is a dip pen and brush ink only; never use it in a fountain pen. Shake or stir before use, and wash nibs and brushes promptly.

Who is it For?

• Calligraphers working in two colours, black and red
• Students of Japanese calligraphy and sumi-e
• Illustrators who want a warm, opaque red for accents
• Hand letterers who want a red that holds a fine hairline

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUSTIONS (FAQ)

Can I use it with a pointed nib?

Yes — it flows well from pointed and broad-edge nibs as well as brushes.

Is it the same as seal paste?

No. Seal paste (inkpad) is an oil-based paste for stamping; Shueki is a liquid ink for writing and painting.

Can I mix it with black sumi?

Mix a small amount in a separate dish to test first; do not pour back into either bottle.
