One small dish, three jobs
A calligraphy desk fills up quickly: an ink well, a water pot, somewhere to put the wet brush down. The Ungetsu-ken combines all three in one stable, lightweight round dish. Fill it with liquid sumi to work from, or with clean water to rinse your brush, and rest the brush across it between strokes.
Why white
Kuretake makes this in black for sumi ink and white for paint. On white, you can judge the real colour of a watercolour or Gansai mix in the lid dish — something a black dish hides.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUSTIONS (FAQ)
Can I grind an ink stick in it?
No — it is not an inkstone. Use it with liquid ink such as Kuretake Bokuju.
White or black?
White for paint, so you can see colours accurately; black for sumi ink, where staining does not show.
