British botanical paper — only at Inkwell, and why it matters
St Cuthbert's Mill is a Somerset papermaker with centuries of history, and their Botanical Ultra Smooth paper is made specifically for the requirements of botanical illustration — not for general watercolour painting, not for mixed media work, but for the specific technique of botanical illustration where a fine dip pen nib must move across the surface with complete freedom and no resistance, and where one to two light wash passes are applied over the completed linework. The surface is smoother than Arches Hot Press — measurably so when tested with a fine dip pen nib. This matters because botanical illustration often involves very fine linework, detailed hatching, and stippling that require the nib to glide over the surface without any roughness or tooth that would produce scratchy or uneven marks. At 50% cotton the paper is archival without the cost of 100% cotton, and at 300gsm it accepts pen and light wash without buckling. And it is not available from any other UK specialist retailer at the time of writing.

St Cuthbert's Mill versus Arches — when to use each
Both are excellent papers for botanical illustration. St Cuthbert's Mill Botanical Ultra Smooth has a smoother surface that is specifically optimised for fine dip pen linework and single-layer wash — the paper where the pen-work part of botanical illustration is most precise. Arches Hot Press handles heavier multi-layer wash and is 100% cotton — the archival standard for finished work. Many botanical illustrators use St Cuthbert's Mill for detailed linework studies and preparatory pieces, and Arches for finished exhibition pieces where multiple layers of wash will be applied over the completed linework.

Honest Note:

Ultra-smooth surface requires a clean, well-maintained dip pen nib — any burr, roughness, or debris on the nib will catch and scratch on this very smooth surface in a way that would be less visible on a rougher paper. Inspect and clean nibs before use. Not suitable for heavy multi-layer watercolour wash — performs best with pen and 1–2 light wash passes.

Who is it For?

  • Botanical illustrators who need a smooth, controlled surface for fine dip pen linework and hatching
  • Scientific illustrators working to publication or exhibition standard who want a premium British-made paper
  • Anyone who has heard this paper recommended by botanical illustration tutors or within the Kew/RHS botanical illustration community
  • Practitioners who have found Arches Hot Press slightly too rough for their finest pen nibs and want a smoother surface

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUSTIONS (FAQ)

How does this compare to Arches Hot Press?

The St Cuthbert's Mill Botanical Ultra Smooth has a noticeably smoother surface than Arches Hot Press — this is its defining advantage for fine dip pen work. Arches handles heavier multi-layer wet media and is 100% cotton (fully archival). St Cuthbert's Mill is optimised for the pen-work part of botanical illustration and handles 1–2 light wash layers. For finished pieces requiring heavy wash, use Arches. For detailed pen-work studies and pieces where the linework is the primary medium, St Cuthbert's Mill gives a finer, smoother result.

Why are these sold in packs of 6 rather than individual sheets?

This is the supplier's standard format for this paper. Individual sheets are available on request in the Brighton Lanes store for practitioners who want to test the paper before purchasing a full pack.

Is it fountain pen safe?

Yes — the smooth surface accepts fountain pen and dip pen inks without feathering, exactly as intended for botanical illustration use. The slight ink absorption at 50% cotton is calibrated for botanical illustration wash technique.
