Tachikawa Dip Pen Nib Set — Japanese Nib Starter Kit

The Tachikawa Dip Pen Nib Set is a starter kit from Japan’s best-known nib maker: four polished dip pen nibs — Saji, G, Nihonji and Maru — plus a 3mm C-type calligraphy nib, a wooden holder that takes all five, a mini bottle of indigo dye ink, a nib sample book with a calligraphy beginner’s guide, and test paper. It is the simplest way to try every main Japanese nib shape, and broad-edge lettering, before committing to a pack of any one.

Nib Flexibility

Four pointed nibs — G (flexible, bold swell), Saji (firm, steady), Nihonji (the Japanese character pen, for even lettering strokes) and Maru (ultra-fine) — plus one rigid 3mm C-type calligraphy nib

Line Variation

Hairline (Maru) to bold swell (G); steady, controlled lines (Saji, Nihonji); broad-edge thick-and-thin strokes up to 3mm (C-type)

Holder Fit

Wooden free pen holder included — takes all five nibs, pointed and calligraphy. The four pointed nibs also fit the Tachikawa T-25 and TAMO

The Nib Safety Net

"Gravity Happens. We’ve Got You Covered."

We know the heartbreak of a fountain pen hitting the floor. As a member of our Creative Rewards, you don't have to worry about the 'tines.' If the worst happens, just send us a photo and we'll send you a 50% discount for a fresh start.

"The Nib Safety Net" – Terms & Conditions

  • Eligibility: This benefit is exclusive to active members of the Creative Rewards program at the time of the accident.
  • Coverage: The 50% discount applies strictly to accidental damage (e.g., dropping the pen) that renders the nib unusable. It does not cover intentional damage, loss of the pen, theft, or normal wear and tear.
  • The Claim: To activate your discount, you must provide a clear photo of the damaged nib and your original order number to oops@yourstore.com.
  • Limitations: This discount is valid for a one-time replacement per pen purchased and applies only to the cost of the replacement nib unit. It cannot be combined with other promotional codes or used for full pen replacements.
  • Availability: We will provide the discount for the exact nib model where stock is available. If the model is discontinued, we will offer a 50% discount on a comparable alternative nib unit.

Five nibs, two disciplines

The hardest part of starting dip pen work is choosing the nib, and buying ten of each shape is expensive guesswork. This set puts the four pointed Japanese nibs side by side — the G for expressive swell, the Saji and Nihonji for steadier lines, the Maru for hairlines and fine detail — and adds a 3mm C-type nib for broad-edge calligraphy. Work through the test paper, notice which nib you keep reaching for, then buy that one by the pack.

Everything in the box gets used

The wooden free pen holder takes every nib in the set, so you can move from a G-nib sketch to broad-edge lettering without changing tools. The nib sample book shows the line each nib makes, the beginner’s guide takes you through your first calligraphy strokes, and the test paper is chosen to suit the indigo dye ink. Tachikawa has been making dip pen nibs in Japan since 1935 — these are the same nib shapes professional illustrators buy by the box.

Honest Note:

This is a sampler, not a supply — one of each nib, and a nib used daily wears within weeks. The indigo ink is a dye-based colour ink for trying the nibs out: it is not waterproof and will run if you colour or wash over it. For waterproof linework, use Tachikawa Jet Black or Deleter Black No. 4. The C-type is a broad-edge lettering nib, not a drawing nib. If your interest is purely manga and comics, the Nikko Manga Pen Nib Set swaps the Nihonji and calligraphy nibs for a School nib and a second G-nib, and comes with waterproof Jet Black

Who is it For?

• Complete beginners who want to try every main Japanese nib shape without buying five packs
• Hand letterers and calligraphers who want pointed and broad-edge nibs in one box
• A considered gift for someone who draws or letters and has never used a dip pen
• Teachers running an introductory dip pen or calligraphy session

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUSTIONS (FAQ)

Should I choose this or the Nikko Manga Pen Nib Set?

This set includes a broad monoline nib and blue ink, and suits lettering and general drawing. The Nikko set includes a School nib and black ink, and is built around the manga page. Both include three G-nibs and a Maru.

Why does a new nib repel ink?

New steel nibs are coated with a thin protective oil that repels water-based ink. Pass the nib briefly through a candle flame (one second only) or wipe it firmly with isopropyl alcohol on a cloth before first use.

Can I buy the nibs separately once I find my favourite?

Yes. The Tachikawa G-Nib, Maru Nib and T-600 Saji Nib are all stocked individually in packs.
