3 Oysters Cool Gray is a true neutral grey fountain pen and dip pen ink made in Paju, South Korea. It is the tonal support ink in the Delicious series — the colour that makes all other colours in an illustration palette work harder by providing mid-tones and shadows without warm or cool bias.

Returns

30-Day Change of Mind: 

We offer a 30-day return window (exceeding the UK legal minimum of 14 days). Items must be unused, in original packaging, and in "as-new" condition.

Faulty Goods: 

In the rare event of a defect, you are entitled to a full refund or replacement within 30 days. We will cover all return shipping costs for faulty items.

Defective Nibs: 

Occasionally, a pen may arrive dry or a nib maybe scratchy. Contact us within 7 days of purchase with a photo/video of the issue and we will send a replacement immediately.

Exclusions:

Due to the nature of the product, unless faulty we cannot accept returns on opened markers or used paper pads returned.

Digital Goods: 

The "Birthday Palette" and other digital downloads are non-refundable once accessed.

What a grey ink does that no other colour can

Black and white define the extremes. Everything between them is where illustration lives. Cool Gray occupies the exact centre of that range without pulling toward any colour family. For cross-hatching, for shadow gradients, for tonal manga panels that require grey without screentone, there is no substitute for a well-made neutral grey. Cool Gray is that ink — flat, consistent, and exactly as neutral as it claims to be.

Using Cool Gray for manga tonal work

Screentone is the traditional analogue approach to grey in manga production. For scanned work going to digital output, grey ink is a direct alternative — apply with a dip pen or brush, scan, and the grey reads correctly in greyscale output. Cool Gray has enough pigment density to read as a distinct mid-tone rather than a faded black.

Honest Note:

NOT suitable for fine or extra-fine fountain pen nibs — elevated pigment load will clog. Medium nib minimum. Cool Gray appears darker on paper than it looks in the bottle. For manga grey work intended for photocopying rather than scanning, test your photocopier first — grey inks do not always reproduce cleanly on consumer copiers. Not waterproof.

Is Cool Gray suitable for fountain pens?

In a medium or broader nib — yes. The elevated pigment load in Dominant Industry inks is not safe in fine or extra-fine nibs. Use it as a dip pen ink if you prefer no risk.

Can I use Cool Gray for manga grey tones instead of screentone?

For scanned digital output — yes. The grey reads as a consistent mid-tone in greyscale scanning. For traditional photocopied zines, screentone is more reliable because grey ink does not always photocopy cleanly. Test your specific equipment before committing to a project.

Does Cool Gray sheen or shimmer?

No. It is a clean, flat grey — no sheen, no shimmer. That is its purpose and its value.
