A black that isn't quite black

Black Moss reads as a very dark green-black when laid down — on first sight you might mistake it for a standard black. Look more carefully as it dries. The pooled areas in curves and stroke endings reveal a deep green undertone. The lighter parts of a stroke show a warmer, slightly olive tone. The result is a black that has depth without announcing itself as a colour.

For illustrators who work in linework — particularly those who want their black ink to feel atmospheric rather than graphic — Black Moss is one of the most useful inks in the range. It pairs naturally with the warmer earth-tone inks in the Colour & Drawing section for illustration work that wants tonal range without obvious colour.

About 3 Oysters

3 Oysters is based in Seoul, South Korea. The brand name comes from the idea of the three tools of writing: pen, ink, and paper — three things that seem ordinary until you understand what they do together. Their Delicious Series inks take their names from Korean food and fashion, and each arrives in a 38ml heavy glass bottle with a distinctive faceted edge designed so the bottle leans at an angle to capture the last drops. We stock eleven colours from their range, chosen specifically for illustration use.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How does Black Moss compare to a standard black ink?

Black Moss is noticeably warmer and greener than a neutral black, particularly in pooled areas. The shading reveals the green-black character more clearly on slow-absorbing papers like Tomoe River. On faster-absorbing papers it reads closer to a dark neutral.

Which paper shows 3 Oysters shading best?

Tomoe River loose sheets show the shading most dramatically — the slow-absorbing surface lets the ink pool and reveal its character. We sell Tomoe River sample packs of five sheets specifically for testing new inks, at the cost of adding them to an ink order.

Is Black Moss suitable for manga work that will be scanned?

Yes — it scans as a dense near-black. The green character does not significantly affect scan output. It is not waterproof, so do not apply wash over it. For waterproof black suitable for wash applications, use Kakimori Sumi Black or De Atramentis Document Black.
