Botanical Start Kit
Botanical pen and ink — what this discipline requires and what is in the kit
Botanical illustration in pen and ink is a distinct discipline from general dip pen illustration. The technique is precise and deliberate: fine linework over light pencil construction, building tonal variation through stippling and controlled hatching rather than expressive flex, and typically working at a scale where the finest nib details are visible. The paper matters significantly — St Cuthbert's Mill Botanical Ultra Smooth is included specifically because its surface is smoother than standard hot press watercolour papers, allowing fine dip pen nibs to glide without any roughness or catching. Two inks are included because botanical illustration conventionally uses black for primary structural linework and sepia for secondary tones, shadow modelling, and the warm quality that characterises finished botanical work. The practice guide is structured around botanical technique specifically — not general dip pen illustration, but the measured, deliberate approach of botanical pen and ink.
What the practice guide covers
The botanical illustration practice guide covers: nib selection for different types of botanical linework (the G-nib for outlines, smaller nibs or fineliners for detail); ink loading and the controlled loading technique needed for precise work; the three tonal techniques used in botanical illustration (line, hatching, stippling) with exercises for each; and a first complete botanical study exercise using the kit contents. The guide also covers the difference between botanical pen and ink and watercolour botanical painting — a clarification that prevents the common mistake of expecting these tools to produce watercolour results.
