Ink Exploration Start Kit
Understanding what inks can do — the problem this kit solves
Most people buy their first bottled fountain pen ink without understanding what differentiates one ink from another at the level that makes specialist inks interesting and worth paying for. They choose a colour they like, buy it, put it in their pen, and write with it. This is a completely valid approach — but it means they may have used inks for years without seeing shading, without seeing sheen, and without understanding why the fountain pen community discusses certain inks with such intensity. The Ink Exploration Kit addresses this gap. Four inks are chosen to demonstrate four distinct ink properties at their clearest: shading (colour variation within a single stroke, darker where more ink is deposited and lighter where less), sheen (a secondary colour visible at certain viewing angles in pooled ink), standard premium dye behaviour (clean, consistent, reliable), and waterproof pigment (permanent under water once dry). With ten sheets of Tomoe River paper — the surface where shading and sheen show at their maximum — and a guide that explains what each property is and how to look for it, this kit replaces years of accidental discovery with a two-hour structured exploration.
What the inks are — and how they are selected
The four inks are selected from current Inkwell stock at time of packing to best demonstrate each property. The Dominant Industry Standard Series ink demonstrates shading — it is consistently one of the most dramatic shading inks available and shows the property clearly on Tomoe River. The sheen demonstration ink is selected from the 3 Oysters or R&K ranges for the most visible sheen available at time of packing. The standard premium dye ink is a Pilot Iroshizuku colour — the reference standard for what a high-quality dye ink looks like when the properties are clean, refined, and consistent rather than dramatic. The waterproof pigment ink is Kakimori or De Atramentis Document Black. The guide identifies each ink's property and explains specifically what to look for.
