Traditional Japanese brushes — a different tool requiring a different technique
Japanese hair brushes are not used in the same way as Western watercolour brushes. The hold is vertical (the brush perpendicular to the paper surface, not angled), the stroke comes from the shoulder and arm rather than the wrist and fingers, and the ink loading is heavier — the soft hair belly holds a substantial amount of ink designed to be released in full gestural strokes rather than rationed in controlled washes. This is the technique of East Asian calligraphy and sumi-e ink painting, both of which require a committed learning approach. The SOU-YO brushes are the correct tool for this practice — made in Japan with natural hair and bamboo handles, available in three sizes from fine calligraphy practice (small) through standard working size (medium) to large-scale work (large).

What these brushes are not for
These brushes are not designed for Western watercolour wash technique and should not be treated as a substitute for Kolinsky sable rounds. The softer hair and different spring mean they will not produce the controlled, precise marks that Kolinsky sable achieves in those applications. Use Escoda Reserva or Rosemary & Co brushes for Western wash illustration. Use SOU-YO brushes for their intended purpose: East Asian calligraphy and sumi-e.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How does the Sou-yo differ from a standard Round?

It has a much stronger "waist" (middle section), which prevents the brush from "belly-flopping" when loaded with thick, opaque paint.

How do I store a Japanese brush? Always hang to dry using the loop at the end of the handle (if present) or store horizontally to prevent water from rotting the wooden handle.

Can I use this with watercolour?

Yes, but its strength is truly revealed when used with Nicker Poster Colour or Gouache.
