Why copperplate calligraphy requires an oblique holder
Copperplate calligraphy — and its close relative Spencerian script — are designed to be written with the pen held at approximately 52 degrees to the writing line. This angle allows the pointed nib to flex symmetrically, producing the oval shapes and consistent shading that define these scripts. For a right-handed writer using a straight holder, achieving this 52-degree angle requires rotating the wrist to an extreme position that is both uncomfortable and mechanically unstable — producing strain over a practice session and inconsistent pressure that shows immediately in the letterforms. An oblique holder solves this by positioning the nib offset to the right via an angled flange. The holder can be held at a comfortable, natural wrist angle while the nib is automatically positioned at the correct approach angle to the paper. The difference in results between a straight holder and an oblique holder for copperplate calligraphy is immediate and pronounced.
Standard versus premium — which to choose
The standard oblique holder has an adjustable metal flange that accepts all standard pointed pen nibs including Brause Steno, Rose, and Blue Pumpkin. It is robust, functional, and the correct first purchase. The premium lacquered wooden holder has the same adjustable flange mechanism in a beautifully finished wooden handle — a desk tool appropriate once you have committed to a sustained calligraphy practice. Both are right-handed.

Returns
30-Day Change of Mind:
We offer a 30-day return window (exceeding the UK legal minimum of 14 days). Items must be unused, in original packaging, and in "as-new" condition.
Faulty Goods:
In the rare event of a defect, you are entitled to a full refund or replacement within 30 days. We will cover all return shipping costs for faulty items.
Defective Nibs:
Occasionally, a pen may arrive dry or a nib maybe scratchy. Contact us within 7 days of purchase with a photo/video of the issue and we will send a replacement immediately.
Exclusions:
Due to the nature of the product, unless faulty we cannot accept returns on opened markers or used paper pads returned.
Digital Goods:
The "Birthday Palette" and other digital downloads are non-refundable once accessed.
