Sailor Fude de Mannen (Standard)

Sailor Fude de Mannen (Standard)

The Sailor Fude de Mannen is an angle-variable fountain pen with a distinctively bent nib tip — tilting the pen flatter gives a hair-thin line, tilting it more upright gives a bold stroke, all from the same nib and the same hand motion. It's the accessible entry point into angle-variable writing, and a genuine inking tool for illustrators and comic artists, not just a calligraphy novelty.

The Nib Safety Net

"Gravity Happens. We’ve Got You Covered."

We know the heartbreak of a fountain pen hitting the floor. As a member of our Creative Rewards, you don't have to worry about the 'tines.' If the worst happens, just send us a photo and we'll send you a 50% discount for a fresh start.

"The Nib Safety Net" – Terms & Conditions

  • Eligibility: This benefit is exclusive to active members of the Creative Rewards program at the time of the accident.
  • Coverage: The 50% discount applies strictly to accidental damage (e.g., dropping the pen) that renders the nib unusable. It does not cover intentional damage, loss of the pen, theft, or normal wear and tear.
  • The Claim: To activate your discount, you must provide a clear photo of the damaged nib and your original order number to oops@yourstore.com.
  • Limitations: This discount is valid for a one-time replacement per pen purchased and applies only to the cost of the replacement nib unit. It cannot be combined with other promotional codes or used for full pen replacements.
  • Availability: We will provide the discount for the exact nib model where stock is available. If the model is discontinued, we will offer a 50% discount on a comparable alternative nib unit.

Most catalogues file this nib type purely under calligraphy, which undersells half of what it actually does. The bend in the nib means line width is controlled entirely by the angle you hold the pen at, not by pressure — which makes it functionally similar to the flexible brush-pens and dip nibs used in manga and comic inking, but in a refillable, no-mess fountain pen body. An illustrator can produce fine detail linework and bold, weighted outlines from a single pen simply by changing the tilt, which is exactly the kind of line-weight variation used to convey depth, speed, and emphasis in panel work.

Honest Note:

The angle range is fixed and relatively modest on this standard version — if a customer finds they want a more dramatic width range once they understand the technique, the Sailor Naginata Fude de Mannen is the next step up, not a replacement purchase made too early.

Who is it For?

  • Illustrators and manga/comic artists doing their own inking who want bold-to-fine line variation from one pen
  • Calligraphers and hand letterers curious about angle-variable technique as an alternative to pressure-flex
  • Anyone wanting an expressive, characterful line for journaling or sketch annotation without committing to a full brush pen setup

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUSTIONS (FAQ)

Is this the same as a flex nib?

No — a flex nib varies line width through pressure (tine spread), while the Fude de Mannen varies it purely through the angle you hold the pen at. They're different mechanisms and different skills; this one doesn't require any pressure control at all, just consistent angle awareness.

Can I use this for actual comic inking, or is it just for calligraphy?

Genuinely both. The same tilt-for-width mechanism that makes it good for decorative lettering is exactly what makes it useful for varying line weight in panel linework — hold it flatter for fine detail lines, more upright for bold outlines.

Does it use a proprietary cartridge?

Yes — Sailor's own cartridge/converter system, not standard international. Stock Sailor-specific ink alongside this pen at checkout.
