Sailor Naginata Fude de Mannen

The Sailor Naginata Fude de Mannen is a fountain pen with a specially ground 21K gold nib designed to mimic brush-style (fude) strokes. Unlike a flex nib, line width is controlled by the angle at which the pen is held against the paper, not by writing pressure — a smoothly curved tip produces fine lines near vertical and broad strokes as the angle lowers, with the nib even usable upside-down for the finest line.

The Nib Safety Net

"Gravity Happens. We’ve Got You Covered."

We know the heartbreak of a fountain pen hitting the floor. As a member of our Creative Rewards, you don't have to worry about the 'tines.' If the worst happens, just send us a photo and we'll send you a 50% discount for a fresh start.

"The Nib Safety Net" – Terms & Conditions

  • Eligibility: This benefit is exclusive to active members of the Creative Rewards program at the time of the accident.
  • Coverage: The 50% discount applies strictly to accidental damage (e.g., dropping the pen) that renders the nib unusable. It does not cover intentional damage, loss of the pen, theft, or normal wear and tear.
  • The Claim: To activate your discount, you must provide a clear photo of the damaged nib and your original order number to oops@yourstore.com.
  • Limitations: This discount is valid for a one-time replacement per pen purchased and applies only to the cost of the replacement nib unit. It cannot be combined with other promotional codes or used for full pen replacements.
  • Availability: We will provide the discount for the exact nib model where stock is available. If the model is discontinued, we will offer a 50% discount on a comparable alternative nib unit.

Angle, Not Pressure — A Genuinely Different Mechanism

It's worth understanding clearly how this nib differs from a flex pen like the Pilot Falcon, since both get loosely grouped as "expressive" pens. The Naginata's line variation comes entirely from nib angle, not tine flex. Developed by Sailor's nib grinder Nobuyoshi Nagahara to recreate the character of brush calligraphy, the nib is curved rather than sharply bent, giving smooth, controllable transitions across the full range of paper surfaces. Holding the pen close to vertical produces a fine line; lowering the angle broadens the stroke considerably; the nib can even be flipped and written with upside-down to produce the very finest line the pen is capable of. This makes the Naginata a genuinely different creative tool from a flex pen — closer in spirit to a brush than to a spring-tined nib.

Honest Note:

This is a specialty nib with a genuine learning curve and a significant price difference from the Falcon, reflecting Sailor's 21K gold and the labour-intensive specialty grind. It is not a substitute for a flex pen — the writing technique and resulting effect are different — so set expectations accordingly when comparing the two side by side.

Who is it For?

  • Illustrators and sketchers wanting brush-like line variation from a fountain pen rather than a true brush
  • Fountain pen enthusiasts interested in Japanese nib craftsmanship and specialty grinds
  • Calligraphers exploring fude (brush-style) lettering as a complement to Western scripts
