The gold nib — what it actually means in practice
Gold nibs are softer than steel. This matters in one specific way: under the pressure of writing, a gold nib flexes very slightly at the tipping, conforming to the angle and pressure of an individual writer's hand over time. The result is a nib that, after months of use, has been shaped by the person who uses it and writes differently for them than it would for anyone else. This is not immediately noticeable in the first session — the difference is subtle initially and grows over time. An experienced fountain pen user who has owned a good gold nib for a year will notice the difference clearly; a new user in the first session will not. The other side of this property: gold nibs are more susceptible to damage from dropping. A steel nib usually survives a fall; a gold nib may distort in a way that requires professional attention. The Profit Standard is a desk and studio pen rather than a daily carry item.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the practical difference between a gold nib and a gold-plated steel nib?

The writing performance on day one is similar — the main difference is that gold is softer and conforms to the writer's hand over time. After months of regular use, a gold nib has adjusted slightly to the angle and pressure of the person who uses it, becoming uniquely theirs. A steel nib remains the same throughout its life. Gold nibs are also more susceptible to damage from impact. The long-term personalisation is what gold nib users are paying for.

Is this available in nib grades other than fine?

We stock Fine as standard. Other grades may be available on request — contact us before ordering, as availability varies and lead times from Japan apply.

Which inks should I avoid?

Avoid iron gall inks for extended use — the mild acidity over long periods can affect gold nib tipping. All dye-based fountain pen inks are safe. Pigment inks (Kakimori) are safe with regular weekly flushing.
