Architectural detail without the time investment of hand-drawing
Drawing consistent, proportioned brickwork by hand requires careful measurement, a steady hand, and a significant time investment. Each course of bricks must be aligned, each brick proportioned correctly, and the mortar joints made consistent — the more of the panel the brickwork covers, the more time the process takes. Deleter's brickwork screentone provides a pre-printed regular brick pattern that can be cut to cover a background area and adhered in a fraction of the time. The resulting brickwork has the mechanical regularity of real brick construction and reads clearly as brickwork even after printing reduction. The correct application is for urban environments, period settings, interior backgrounds with exposed brick, and any scene where a brick surface needs to be clearly identifiable without becoming the dominant visual element of the panel.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do I align brickwork screentone correctly with panel edges and perspective?

For a flat surface facing the reader directly (no foreshortening), align the horizontal mortar lines parallel to the panel's horizontal edges. For a surface in perspective, the screentone can be applied flat and then the overall shape cut to the perspective-foreshortened boundary of the surface — the brick pattern will appear slightly distorted in perspective as it would in reality, but this often reads acceptably. For strongly foreshortened surfaces, hand-drawn brickwork following the perspective may be more convincing than screentone.

Is the brick scale correct for standard manga pages?

The brick scale is calibrated to read as brickwork at standard manga print reduction ratios (B4 original reduced to A5 print). Before applying to a final artwork intended for a different reproduction size, check the brick scale at your intended final size — too large at print size reads as cartoon brick rather than realistic brick, and too small may lose the mortar joint deta

Can I use this for curved or irregular surfaces?

Screentone is a flat adhesive film and cannot physically curve or stretch. For curved surfaces (a rounded column, an arched wall), the brickwork must be drawn by hand following the surface curvature. Screentone brickwork is suitable for flat surfaces only.
