Cross-hatching screentone versus hand-drawn — when to use each
Cross-hatching is a shading technique that creates tone through a grid of intersecting lines. Hand-drawn cross-hatching produces organic variation in line spacing and pressure that has an expressive, human quality — the lines are never perfectly regular and this is part of their character. Screentone cross-hatching produces a perfectly regular, mechanical grid — every line equally spaced, every crossing equally weighted. These are not superior and inferior versions of the same thing; they are different tools for different effects. Hand-drawn cross-hatching is appropriate for expressive, gestural illustration where the mark-making is part of the visual character. Screentone cross-hatching is appropriate for areas where mechanical uniformity is the desired quality — technical objects, architectural surfaces, or any area where regularity signals precision and control. Using screentone cross-hatching selectively, alongside hand-drawn marks elsewhere in the panel, can create contrast between the human and the mechanical within the same composition.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When would I use cross-hatch screentone over dot screentone?

When you want tonal value with visible line texture rather than the smooth, regular halftone of a dot pattern. Cross-hatch screentone reads as a different surface quality from dots — it is more active, more textural, and has stronger directionality. It is particularly effective for surfaces that benefit from that visual quality: metal, concrete, dense fabric, or any area where you want the tone to have character rather than just filling space.

Is screentone cross-hatching the same as hand-drawn?

No — screentone produces a perfectly regular grid; hand-drawn cross-hatching has organic variation in line weight and spacing. Both are valid; the choice is between mechanical uniformity and expressive variation. Many artists use both in the same piece for different effects.

: What is the difference between cross-hatch screentone and regular dot screentone in visual effect?

Dot screentone reads as smooth grey tone at normal viewing distance. Cross-hatch screentone retains visible line texture even at normal viewing distance — the grid structure is apparent. Whether this texture reads as appropriate or distracting depends on the surface being depicted and the overall visual style of the piece.
