Speed lines — conveying motion in a static medium
Speed lines are among the most immediately recognisable visual conventions of manga — radiating lines that fill a panel to convey the sensation of motion, impact, or dramatic emphasis. Drawing speed lines by hand requires careful measuring from a central point and consistent line spacing across the panel, which is both time-consuming and difficult to achieve consistently. Deleter's speed line screentone provides pre-printed speed lines with a marked centre point that allows the artist to position the convergence at exactly the intended location in the panel, cut to shape, and adhere — producing the clean, precise speed line effect that would take significantly longer to achieve by hand. The screentone version produces a different quality from hand-drawn speed lines: more mechanical and precise, which reads as particularly effective for technological or high-speed subjects, whereas hand-drawn speed lines have more organic expressiveness.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do I position speed line screentone correctly in a panel?

Identify the centre of the motion in your panel — the point from which the movement radiates. This is usually the focal point of the action (a fist, a vehicle, a character in motion). Hold the screentone sheet over the panel with the centre point mark positioned over this focal point. Check that the speed lines read as radiating from the correct location, then mark the cutting line around the panel border, cut, and adhere.

Can speed lines be combined with other screentone patterns

Yes — speed lines are often used in panels where the background has already been toned with a gradient (52-10) or a dot pattern, with the speed lines applied over the top to suggest motion within the toned space. Apply the background tone first, then the speed lines over it. Test on a scrap piece to verify the combined visual effect reads as intended.

Is this product for digital work?

This is an analogue product for traditional manga production. For digital work, speed line filters and brushes are available in Clip Studio Paint, Procreate, and most illustration software — typically with more control over density, angle, and speed line style than screentone allows.
