Maker’s Cabinet Høvel Pencil Sharpener

Maker’s Cabinet Høvel Pencil Sharpener

The Høvel is a precision pencil sharpener from London design studio Maker’s Cabinet — a solid brass pencil plane that works like a miniature woodworking hand plane rather than a rotating blade inside a plastic box. It lets you choose the exact length and angle of your pencil point rather than accepting whatever a standard sharpener produces.

"The Nib Safety Net" – Terms & Conditions

  • Eligibility: This benefit is exclusive to active members of the Creative Rewards program at the time of the accident.

  • The Claim: To activate your discount, you must provide a clear photo of the damaged nib and your original order number to oops@yourstore.com.
  • Limitations: This discount is valid for a one-time replacement per pen purchased and applies only to the cost of the replacement nib unit. It cannot be combined with other promotional codes or used for full pen replacements.
  • Availability: We will provide the discount for the exact nib model where stock is available. If the model is discontinued, we will offer a 50% discount on a comparable alternative nib unit.

The pencil sharpener that changes what a sharpened pencil means

A standard sharpener produces one shape of point, every time, regardless of what the pencil is being used for. The Høvel produces a point that is as long or as short, as sharp or as blunt, as you choose — because a pencil plane lets you take a stroke at a time rather than rotating through a fixed-geometry cutter. For an illustrator who needs a long, fine drawing point, this is the difference between accepting the standard result and producing the right point for the work. For an architect who works with soft leads and needs a chisel edge rather than a conventional point, a standard sharpener is simply the wrong tool.

Maker’s Cabinet was started by three Central Saint Martins product design graduates who were dissatisfied with the disposable, thoughtless nature of most stationery — the Høvel is the piece that best articulates what they were trying to make instead. It is solid brass, uses a replaceable carbon-steel blade, and is designed with a separate walnut base for desk display. It photographs beautifully, which matters for a gift, but it also earns that presence because it actually changes the experience of working with pencils.

Honest Note:

This is a slow, deliberate tool — it produces a controlled point by planing rather than grinding, which takes longer than a conventional sharpener and rewards patience rather than speed. It's not suited to sharpening many pencils quickly. The blade is exposed during use and should be kept away from children. Replacement blades are inexpensive and available directly from Maker's Cabinet when performance drops.

Who is it For?

  • Illustrators, architects, and anyone who is precise about pencil point shape
  • A Tier 2 “proper gift” for someone who already owns plenty of stationery and wants something genuinely different
  • Pairs well with the walnut base as a small bundled set
  • Anyone who wants a desk object that makes them think differently about a mundane daily action

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUSTIONS (FAQ)

Does it work on coloured pencils as well as graphite?

Yes — the plane mechanism works on most standard hex and round pencils regardless of core type, including coloured pencil and charcoal pencils. Very soft cores (oil-based coloured pencils) may smear the blade slightly; a wipe between uses keeps it clean.

Do I need the walnut base?

No — it’s a display and desk accessory, not required for the sharpener to function. But it photographs beautifully and turns the Høvel from a tool into a desk object, which matters for a gift context.

How often do the blades need replacing?

Maker’s Cabinet doesn’t publish a specific lifespan, but blades are inexpensive and quick to swap — most users replace them when sharpening performance noticeably drops rather than on a fixed schedule.

Is this faster or slower than a conventional sharpener?

Slower and more deliberate — this is a tool for someone who wants control over their point shape, not someone sharpening twelve pencils before a class starts. Set that expectation in gifting copy.
