Animation studio brushes developed with working background artists

The Nicker SOU-YO brushes were not designed in isolation — they were developed with the cooperation of active animation background art studios and the artists who work in them. The result is a brush specification shaped by professional production requirements: a weasel hair core for strength and spring, topped with premium horse and sheep hair that tapers to a fine, cohesive tip capable of both large-area colour laying and sharp detail work. The bamboo handle is the traditional Japanese format — balanced, lightweight, and suited to the vertical hold technique of Japanese calligraphy and animation painting. The three-brush beginner set provides sizes 6.5mm, 7.7mm, and 8.5mm across the available range — covering fine to large area work in a single purchase.

What these brushes are designed for — and what they are not

The SOU-YO brushes are designed for painting with Nicker Poster Colour, watercolour, and similar paint media in the Japanese animation background tradition. They are the correct tool for practitioners learning or working in this discipline. They are not designed for Western watercolour wash technique and should not be treated as a substitute for Kolinsky sable rounds in that context. The softer, larger hair profile produces different marks than Kolinsky rounds — broad, generously loaded strokes with a fine tip for detail, suited to the animation background painting style rather than the controlled washes of botanical illustration or Western watercolour

Honest Note:

Natural hair — clean thoroughly after every session. These brushes are designed for animation background painting in the Japanese tradition and are not a direct substitute for Kolinsky sable rounds in Western watercolour or botanical illustration. Technique matters: study the intended application before expecting the same results as a Western-tradition watercolour brush.

Who is it For?

  • Illustrators and anime artists interested in the analogue Japanese animation background painting tradition
  • Anyone using Nicker Poster Colour who wants brushes designed to work with it
  • Practitioners learning the Japanese animation background painting technique who want a complete starting brush set
  • Artists who want genuine Japanese production brushes rather than Western alternatives adapted to this application
