Pro Tip: The "Lead Storage" Secret: Always keep your lead refills in their original cases. Exposure to humidity or high temperatures can cause the clay and wax binders in the graphite to soften, which leads to increased smudging and "clogged" mechanical pencil mechanisms. For the best performance, store them in a cool, dry pencil case.

Lead grade as a drawing tool — choosing between HB, H, and 2H
Mechanical pencil leads for illustration underdrawing are not interchangeable in the way that, say, different black inks are. The grade (hardness/softness of the graphite formulation) determines both how visible the line is and how easily it erases or reads through to the scanner. HB is the middle of the standard range: visible enough for confident underdrawing and construction, dark enough to see clearly but light enough to erase cleanly if a correction is needed. H is one step harder — a lighter, less visible mark that is useful for underdrawing that will be completely covered by inked linework and where any residual pencil showing through to the scan should be minimal. 2H is the lightest practical option — for perspective construction lines, rough blocking, and any marks that serve a purely structural purpose during the drawing process and need to be as invisible as possible in the final scan. Many illustrators use all three grades at different stages: 2H for perspective and layout, H for structural construction, HB for the final underdrawing that is close enough to the intended line to serve as a direct inking guide.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What does "Ain Stein" mean?

It is a play on the German word for stone, emphasising the lead's rigid, strong nature.

Which grade should I start with?

HB is the standard starting grade — the most versatile, visible enough for confident underdrawing, erasable cleanly, and light enough that residual pencil does not dominate a greyscale scan. Move to H or 2H when you want lighter lines for specific stages of underdrawing (construction and perspective work where the marks are structural rather than the final underdrawing).

Are Ain Stein leads compatible with other 0.5mm mechanical pencils?

Yes — standard 0.5mm diameter leads fit any 0.5mm mechanical pencil regardless of brand. The Ain Stein formula's primary advantage over standard leads is improved break resistance — the polymer-reinforced graphite formulation is stronger under the lateral stress that causes standard 0.5mm leads to break during normal use.
