When water alone is not enough — what the Platinum flush kit does
Regular fountain pen maintenance for most practitioners involves flushing the pen with clean water when changing ink or every few weeks in regular use. For most dye-based inks in normal use, this water flushing through the nib and feed is sufficient. The Platinum Ink Cleaner Kit is for the cases where it is not sufficient: when switching from a very dark or heavily pigmented ink to a lighter colour and residue is visible after water flushing; after using pigment-based inks (Kakimori, De Atramentis Document) where pigment particles can settle in the feed channels; when a pen has been stored unused with ink in it for an extended period and the ink has thickened or gelled in the channels; or when a hard start or skip has appeared that does not resolve with nib rinsing. The kit uses the same water as normal cleaning but delivers it under more controlled pressure through the converter mechanism, flushing the channels more thoroughly than gravity rinsing allows.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is this a chemical cleaner?

No — the Platinum Ink Cleaner Kit is a mechanical flushing system that uses clean water. It provides more thorough and controlled water flushing than simply running water through the nib by delivering the water under controlled pressure through the converter mechanism. For chemical pen flush solutions (dilute ammonia, specialist pen cleaning liquids), these are separate products not stocked at Inkwell; plain water is sufficient for most fountain pen maintenance.

Is it compatible with my fountain pen?

Compatible with most fountain pens that accept a Platinum-format converter or have a squeeze-fill mechanism. The adaptor fits most standard converter ports. For pens with unusual filling mechanisms (piston fillers, vacuum fillers, eyedropper fills), the converter port attachment may not fit — check your specific pen's converter mechanism before purchasing.

How often should I flush my pen?

For regular-use pens with standard dye inks — flush when changing ink colour, or every six to eight weeks in regular use. For pens with pigment-based inks (Kakimori, De Atramentis Document) — flush every one to two weeks to prevent pigment settling in the feed. For pens that have been unused with ink in them for more than a month — flush before returning to use.
