Sailor Pro Gear Slim [14kt Gold Nib]

Sailor Pro Gear Slim [14kt Gold Nib]

The Sailor Pro Gear Slim is a slim, carefully balanced fountain pen with a 14-karat gold nib, made in Hiroshima by a company that has made fountain pens since 1911. It is the pen a serious writer chooses when they are ready to understand what a properly made gold nib feels like — and the pen a gift-giver chooses when the occasion is significant enough to warrant something the recipient will use for the rest of their writing life.

The Nib Safety Net

"Gravity Happens. We’ve Got You Covered."

We know the heartbreak of a fountain pen hitting the floor. As a member of our Creative Rewards, you don't have to worry about the 'tines.' If the worst happens, just send us a photo and we'll send you a 50% discount for a fresh start.

"The Nib Safety Net" – Terms & Conditions

  • Eligibility: This benefit is exclusive to active members of the Creative Rewards program at the time of the accident.
  • Coverage: The 50% discount applies strictly to accidental damage (e.g., dropping the pen) that renders the nib unusable. It does not cover intentional damage, loss of the pen, theft, or normal wear and tear.
  • The Claim: To activate your discount, you must provide a clear photo of the damaged nib and your original order number to oops@yourstore.com.
  • Limitations: This discount is valid for a one-time replacement per pen purchased and applies only to the cost of the replacement nib unit. It cannot be combined with other promotional codes or used for full pen replacements.
  • Availability: We will provide the discount for the exact nib model where stock is available. If the model is discontinued, we will offer a 50% discount on a comparable alternative nib unit.

The pen that changes what a fountain pen feels like

The difference between a well-made steel nib and a well-made gold nib is not dramatic — it is subtle and consistent, and it accumulates over time rather than arriving as an obvious revelation. Gold gives slightly under pressure and springs back, which means the nib adapts minutely to the writer’s hand rather than the writer adapting entirely to the nib. Over thousands of pages, this is the difference between a pen that stays a pen and a pen that becomes your pen.

Sailor has made fountain pens in Hiroshima since 1911, and the Pro Gear Slim is the house at its most refined: a narrower, lighter barrel than the standard Pro Gear, with a 14kt gold nib that is specifically sought after by fountain pen enthusiasts for a combination of springiness and smoothness that is distinctively Sailor rather than generic. The Slim profile suits someone who prefers a slender grip — if the recipient writes with a finer pen, this will feel immediately right in the hand.

Honest Note:

Sailor uses a proprietary cartridge and converter system — standard international cartridges will not fit this pen, which is worth knowing before the recipient sits down to use it for the first time. Make sure Sailor ink or cartridges are easy to find alongside it at the point of purchase. A 14kt gold nib is more vulnerable to a hard impact than a steel nib — it should not be left uncapped and loose on a hard surface, and a drop at an unfortunate angle onto a hard floor can distort the tip. This is true of any gold-nibbed pen rather than specific to the Pro Gear Slim, and it does not mean it needs to be treated preciously — just that it deserves a cap.

Who is it For?

  • A fountain pen enthusiast who writes regularly with a good steel-nib pen and has not yet used a gold nib
  • A milestone gift — significant birthday, graduation, retirement, or anniversary — for someone whose writing is important to them
  • Someone who will immediately understand and appreciate what they have been given

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUSTIONS (FAQ)

Gifting it well:

arrives in Sailor’s own presentation box. Pairs naturally with a bottle of Sailor Shikiori ink — Sailor’s own ink is formulated to work optimally with Sailor pens, and arriving with ink means the pen can be used immediately.

Which nib width is the safest gift choice?

Fine is the most universal starting point — it suits a wide range of handwriting sizes and paper types without the risk of a Broad feeling too wet on thinner paper or an Extra Fine feeling scratchy to someone used to a wider line.

Does it use standard international cartridges?

No — Sailor uses a proprietary cartridge and converter system. Make sure Sailor cartridges or the Sailor converter are available alongside the pen so it can be used immediately on receipt.

Pro Gear Slim or standard Pro Gear?

The Slim has a narrower barrel and lighter overall weight, which makes it feel more elegant and suits someone who prefers a slender grip. The standard Pro Gear has more presence in the hand and suits someone who prefers a heavier pen or writes with a looser grip. If you know which they prefer, choose accordingly; if not, the Slim is the more distinctive choice.
