Watercolour for botanical illustration — and why this specific palette
Botanical illustration in pen and ink frequently incorporates watercolour wash to add colour, tonal depth, and the quality of light that characterises finished botanical work. The Cotman botanical set provides the eight colours most commonly needed for botanical illustration without requiring practitioners to assemble a palette from scratch or purchase colours they will not use. The selection: Sap Green for foliage and stem tones; Yellow Ochre for warm earth tones and dried or aged leaf colours; Burnt Sienna for warm shadows and autumn colours; Raw Umber for neutral warm grounding; Cobalt Blue for cool shadows and sky wash; Alizarin Crimson for warm reds and mixing; Neutral Tint for shadow and depth without the greenish cast that black can produce; and Ivory Black for very dark accents. Together these eight colours mix to produce the complete tonal and hue range needed for most botanical subjects.

Student grade — what this means for botanical illustration
Cotman is Winsor & Newton's student-grade range — genuine pigments at lower concentrations than their Professional range, using some pigment substitutes for the most expensive pigments. For learning, portfolio work, and regular studio practice, Cotman is excellent value and performs well in botanical illustration. For work intended for exhibition, publication, or archival long-term preservation, some practitioners upgrade specific colours — particularly Alizarin Crimson (which has lightfastness concerns in many student-grade formulations) — to the W&N Professional range. The other colours in this edit have generally good lightfastness ratings even in Cotman.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is Cotman watercolour professional quality?

Student grade — genuine pigments at lower concentrations than the W&N Professional range, using pigment substitutes in some colours. For learning, portfolio work, and regular practice, Cotman performs well and is good value. For archival exhibition or publication work where maximum lightfastness is required, consider upgrading specific colours — particularly Alizarin Crimson — to the W&N Professional range.

Can I mix Cotman with other watercolour brands?

Yes — watercolour pigments are generally compatible across brands. Mixing Cotman with W&N Professional, Daniel Smith, or Sennelier colours is standard practice as you upgrade specific colours to professional grade over time.

Why these eight colours specifically?

This palette covers the hue range most commonly needed for botanical subjects with as few colours as possible. Earth tones (Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber) for stems, bark, dried plant material, and warm shadows. Sap Green for foliage. Cobalt Blue for cool atmospheric shadows and backgrounds. Alizarin Crimson for reds, pinks, and warm-mixture purples. Neutral Tint for shadow modelling without a strong colour cast. Ivory Black for darkest accents. Eight colours that mix to cover the full botanical illustration range.
